Voltage is the mistake that costs you a fan, so settle it before anything else: a 12V fan wired to a 24V board runs hot and fails within hours, and a 24V fan on 12V barely turns. Read the sticker on your power supply or check your board's fan header and buy to match, since the fans themselves look identical. Next, learn the size code, because it is the only reliable way to order a replacement. A 4010 is 40 by 40 by 10 millimeters, a 5015 is 50 by 50 by 15, and the numbers tell you the mounting hole spacing and the depth you have to clear in the hotend shroud. Then decide between radial and axial. A radial blower takes air in at the face and throws it out of a side outlet, which develops the static pressure needed to push air through a narrow duct at the nozzle, and that is why blowers are standard for part cooling. An axial fan moves more air at almost no pressure and is the right choice for cooling a board or a heatsink in open space, not for feeding a duct. Bearing type sets service life: hydraulic and dual ball bearings run quieter for longer than a plain sleeve, and this is the fan that runs on every layer of every print. Cable length matters more than it sounds, since a 1 meter lead reaches from a toolhead to a board on most bed slingers but not on a taller gantry, and splicing an extension is one more failure point.
